Members of the Maryland National Guard (MDNG)--as well as citizens just joining--have considerable educational benefits. "It's quite possible for a soldier to go to school tuition free," said Maj. Calvin Moore of MDNG Education Services Office. All state colleges/universities are required by state law to provide a 25 percent tuition waiver to MDNG members. Some schools provide a 50 percent tuition waiver because of the efforts and lobbying of MDNG Educational Services; MDNG established a Memorandum-of-Understanding (MOU) with some schools resulting in an additional 25 percent tuition waiver. Federal educational benefits can be used for both undergraduate and graduate studies, while state tuition assistance can only be used for undergraduate work. Additionally, through various programs such as CLEP and arrangements between the Army and various educational bodies soldiers receive college credit for their military education, training, and experience.
